LONDON, SEPT 10 – Nearly 200 environmental activists will be killed worldwide in 2023, the German News Agency (dpa) reported, citing the non-governmental organization (NGO) Global Witness today.

The NGO in its annual report presentation said the most dangerous country for environmental activists is Colombia followed by Brazil, Mexico and Honduras.

According to the report, 85 percent of the murders were recorded in Latin America.

“As the climate crisis escalates, those who dare to speak up to defend our earth face violence, intimidation and murder. Our data shows that the number of murders remains high and very worrying, an unacceptable situation,” said report author Laura Furones.

According to the report, activists fighting for mining, fishing, logging, agribusiness, road and infrastructure construction and hydropower plants are at great risk.

Most of the crimes, however, go unpunished. – Named
