Match preview

Argentina currently sits atop the qualifying standings with 18 points, four points ahead of Uruguay. They have won six of their seven qualifying matches. Colombia sits third with 13 points and three wins and have not suffered a loss.

La Albiceleste holds the all-time head-to-head record with 26 wins. Colombia has notched nine and eight draws. Colombia is seeking revenge for their emotional close call in The States. They were also bested by Argentina in 2022 Qatar qualifiers.

It’s a different Argentina team then many are used to seeing. The team that has won the last World Cup and two consecutive Copa America’s is still No. 1 in the FIFA rankings and has just two losses in their last 64 matches. But they are missing some major pieces.

It’s only the second game since manager Angel Di Maria retired from the international scene and Lionel Scaloni has taken the reigns. Messi’s absence also leaves a profound hole.

Paulo Dybala has taken the unenviable task of sliding into Messi’s spot. He nabbed the third in a 3-0 victory over Chile, joining Alexis Mac Allister and Julian Alvarez with goals.

Lautaro Martinez’s extra time heroics at the Copa America also loom large as he is certain to draw the ire of the rival nation.

Battling injuries, Nicolas Tagliafico and Leonardo Balerdi and Exequiel Palacios will all miss the match for Argentina.

Undefeated Colombia is coming a 1-1 draw against Peru. Luis Diaz’s dazzling strike in the 82nd minute helped them grasp a crucial point. Los Cafeteros will be guided by supernova James Rodriguez. He only played 45 minutes in the previous bout.

The Colombians will be without veteran keeper David Ospina and defender Davinson Sanchez.

The top six teams from each group will qualify for the World Cup. The seventh-place team will compete in the inter-confederation playoff.

Will Lionel Messi play for Argentina?

Argentinean football icon Lionel Messi was left off the 28-man roster following an ankle injury that he suffered at the 2024 Copa America Final against Columbia.

What are the Projected lineups for Argentina vs. Columbia?

Argentina: E. Martinez, Molina, Romero, L. Martinez, Otamendi, De Paul, Enzo Fernandez, Lo Celso, Dybala, Lautaro Martinez, Alvarez

Colombia: Vargas, Mojica, Lucumi, Mina, Munoz, Lerma, Rios, Rodriguez, Diaz, Sinisterra, Cordoba
