Triple jumper Kristin Gierisch is ending her career. The former European Championship runner-up announced this on Instagram. “After 22 years of competitive sport, it’s time to say goodbye,” wrote the 34-year-old.

Gierisch achieved the greatest success of her career at the 2018 European Championships in Berlin, when she won the silver medal with 14.45 meters. A year earlier, she won gold at the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade. She also took second place at the World Indoor Championships in the USA in 2016.

Gierisch is the German record holder both indoors (14.59 meters) and outdoors (14.61 meters). In recent years, however, the Olympic participant in Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo has struggled with injury problems. This season, she missed the German Championships in Braunschweig and the Olympic Games in Paris.

According to the German Athletics Association (DLV), Gierisch will begin her work as a police officer on an inspection in Berlin on October 1.
