MADRID, OCT 27 – Robert Lewandowski scored twice in two minutes as Barcelona thrashed rivals Real Madrid 4-0 yesterday, handing the La Liga champions their first defeat in over a year.

Teenage winger Lamine Yamal and Raphinha completed the big win, while Madrid star Kylian Mbappe suffered disappointment with two goals disallowed for offside on his El Clasico debut for Los Blancos. This defeat caused Madrid to be six points behind the league leader, Barcelona.

France captain Mbappe was often caught out by the visitors’ defensive line, which caused frustration among the supporters at the Santiago Bernabeu. Things got worse when Barcelona scored four goals in the second half.

Barcelona ended Madrid’s record 42-game unbeaten run in La Liga, one game short of the Catalan giants’ all-time record, adding to their success.

“It’s a difficult and bitter moment when you lose a match, especially after so many unbeaten matches,” admitted Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti.

On the other hand, Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has transformed Barcelona in just a few months and in ending four Clasico defeats, his young side produced a victory to show just how far they have come.

“The big objective is to fight against the best in the world and we have shown that we have the ability to beat anyone, that we have the mentality and that we have changed,” said Barcelona goalkeeper Inaki Pena. – AFP
