Be aware of the possible eruption of Mount Kanlaon

MANILA, SEPT 22 – The Philippine national seismological agency issued a warning this morning about the possible eruption of Mount Kanlaon in the central Philippines, reported the German News Agency (dpa).

The volcano released about 10,449 tons of sulfur dioxide and recorded 55 volcanic earthquakes in the last 24 hours, he said.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said an enhanced warning remains in effect for Mount Kanlaon, with a height of 2,465 meters.

Located in Negros, the fourth most populous island in the Philippines, Mount Kanlaon is among the country’s 24 seismically active volcanoes.

The state’s seismic agency advises that sudden steam or phreatic explosions may occur at any time.

Phreatic eruptions or steam explosion eruptions, occur when magma heats groundwater or surface water resulting in explosions of steam, ash, rock and volcanic bombs.

The public is advised that entry into the four kilometer Permanent Danger Zone is prohibited due to the danger of eruption.

All types of aircraft are prohibited from flying near the volcano.

Last June, an explosive eruption took place in the Kanlaon summit crater, sending a plume of ash five kilometers high into the sky. – Named
