Before the Security Council session… calls for international intervention to save the Sudanese

These calls coincided with the intensification of battles in a number of regions Sudan Hundreds were killed.

Human Rights Watch stressed that waiting for ceasefire negotiations is no longer an option in light of the significant deterioration of the situation.

Diplomats say new developments may push… UN Security Council to adopt a tougher stance when it meets on Monday to discuss UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ report on steps member states should take to protect civilians.

Two days before the meeting, Guterres described calls by Sudanese civilians and local and international human rights groups for international intervention to protect civilians as an expression of the great danger that the situation has reached in Sudan.

Human Rights Watch warned of the danger to civilians of the recent escalation of fighting.

“Civilians continue to be subjected to torture and summary execution, and women and girls face widespread sexual violence,” she said.

The fact-finding committee on Sudan, formed by the Human Rights Council, recommended in September the deployment of a mission to protect civilians.

Observers believe that deploying such a mission will not be easy, but they point out that the scale of the Sudan crisis and the intransigence of the warring parties are all reasons that require urgent action to protect civilians.
