The investigation into a suspected left-wing extremist attack on two private cars belonging to Brandenburg’s Interior Minister Michael Stübgen is ongoing. According to initial findings from the State Criminal Police Office, the vehicles on the CDU politician’s property in Finsterwalde in southern Brandenburg may have been smeared with bitumen, a police spokeswoman said. Bitumen is a petroleum product that is used in road construction, for example. The extent of the damage caused was initially unclear.
State security has taken over the investigation. The police spoke of a letter of confession that suggests a left-wing extremist background.
Stübgen: “It has no place in a democracy”
Stübgen stressed that he did not want to be intimidated by the attack on his private cars. “For years I have experienced left-wing agitation against my course in migration and security policy,” he said in a statement after the incident. The fact that a few “stone-age communists are attacking my family’s private property is a clear transgression and has no place in a democracy.”
According to the police’s current information, the attack on the interior minister’s cars took place last Saturday – a good week before the Brandenburg state election. On Sunday, around 2.1 million Brandenburg residents are called to vote.
