BROOKLYN, Ohio — For the last decade in Brooklyn, creative residents have been encouraged to participate in the city’s annual Halloween House Decorating Contest.
“The contest promotes community spirit,” said Brooklyn Mayoral Assistant Jill Ludwig, who coordinates the contest.
“People love to decorate for various seasons. We have a lot of creative residents who decorate their homes for Halloween. Normally for the contest, it’s about 25 homes.”
While the contest doesn’t include formal criteria, Ludwig said the judges, mostly employees, are looking for homes that catch their eye.
“Typically, we see just a lot of creative decorations that involve skeletons, ghosts, pumpkins and lights,” she said. “The level of detail they add to their decorations is just outstanding.
“Some people choose to use inflatables. So it’s just how the house looks overall and the aesthetic appeal of it.”
Entry into the Halloween House Decorating Contest requires each resident to email a photo of their home. Be sure to include name and address.
The deadline to enter is Oct. 30.
“Winners receiving gift cards will be announced via our social media on Halloween,” she said.
“The number varies each year depending on how many homes are entered. Last year, the top six were winners.”
The Halloween House Decorating Contest was started a decade ago by Council-at-Large Andy Celcherts.
“I noticed some people took as much effort, if not more, in decorating for Halloween,” he said. “Some people start weeks ahead of time.
“There is one resident who does it in honor and tradition of a family member that passed. They do a wonderful job of it. It all goes back to community pride and involvement.”
