Brunei wins the Mid-Career Scientist Award

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, OCT 14 – The winners Underwriters Laboratories-ASEAN-US Science Prize for Women 2024 was announced by the ASEAN Science, Technology and Innovation Committee (ASEAN COSTI) in collaboration with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and UL Research Institute (ULRI) during the 86th ASEAN Science, Technology and Innovation Committee Meeting (ASEAN COSTI-86) which took place in the Republic of Singapore, recently.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications (MTIC), here, the announcement marks the 10th anniversary of the prestigious award with the theme 2024, Climate Resilience and Adaptationrecognizes the important role of women scientists who use their work to improve society sustainably and serve as role models for other women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.

The award, which celebrates the extraordinary contribution of women scientists to climate adaptation efforts in Southeast Asia, saw the participation of more than 250 applicants from more than 60 institutions in the ASEAN region.

Brunei Darussalam has won the Mid-Career Scientist Award through Dr Daphne Teck Ching Lai from the School of Digital Sciences, Universiti Brunei Darussalam.

The award recognizes innovative applications of data science and artificial intelligence in the context of climate resilience and adaptation.

Dr Daphne Teck Ching Lai’s research involves monitoring important peatland forests in Southeast Asia, conducting artificial intelligence (AI)-driven water quality analysis as well as developing green energy solutions.

The use of AI in his research plays an important role in the sustainable management of resources as well as the mitigation of the effects of climate change.

Since its inception in 2014, Underwriters Laboratories-ASEAN-US Science Prize for Women has celebrated the achievements of more than 400 female scientists from 10 ASEAN member countries, promoting gender equality in STEM and inspiring the next generation to pursue careers in science.
