Brunei’s forest ecosystem attracts bird enthusiasts

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, OCT 23 – The Department of Tourism Development in collaboration with the Royal Brunei Airlines, recently hosted renowned ornithologist, nature author and international field trip leader from the United Kingdom, Dominic Couzens, for an exciting bird watching experience in the country at the end of last week

According to a statement from the Department of Tourism Development, Dominic during his visit here has explored the beauty of the country’s landscape and immersed himself in the wealth of bird diversity.

He also visited several prominent bird watching sites including Bukit Patoi Recreation Park, Batang Duri Recreation Park and Ulu Temburong National Park.

During the three-day visit, he recorded a total of 119 species of birds that highlight Brunei’s extraordinary biodiversity.

Among the memories for him is when he was able to see the pitta gannet which is a highly sought after bird species among bird watchers, helmeted hornbill which is highly endangered, Spectacled flower pecker which is a newly discovered species in Borneo in 2009 as well velvet-fronted nuthatch.

He shared that bird watching in Brunei is a transformative experience where the beauty of the native forest with the thrill of discovering rare species makes it a paradise for any nature enthusiast.

In addition, Dominic also had the opportunity to witness the unique wild life of the region including long tailed macaques, silvered leaf monkeys, bornean pygmy squirrels, lizard, giant wood spiders as well as saltwater crocodiles.

Brunei Darussalam is rapidly becoming a destination of choice for bird watching enthusiasts due to its diverse ecosystem and native rainforest.

With over 600 recorded species including many endemic and rare species, it offers a unique opportunity for bird watchers to experience nature in its purest form.

A tranquil landscape with a commitment to conservation, it ensures Brunei remains a haven for wildlife and a must-visit location for birdwatching.

The Tourism Development Department is redoubling its efforts to promote Brunei Darussalam through a mix of traditional and digital marketing platforms.

The strategy includes collaborations with well-known influencers and engagement with key figures who are skilled in specific activities, such as bird watching.

By inviting experts like Dominic Couzens, the department effectively highlights Brunei’s rich biodiversity, positioning the country as a destination of choice for birdwatchers.
