Bundesliga: Bochum’s frustrating start continues: Draw against Kiel

After a frustrating start to the new season, VfL Bochum must still wait for its first success. The club could only manage a 2:2 (2:1) draw against the also still winless newly promoted Holstein Kiel. Substitute Shuto Machino (89th minute) scored the visitors’ first Bundesliga point shortly before the end. Benedikt Pichler (15th) had previously put Kiel in the lead. Matus Bero (22nd minute) and Lukas Daschner (35th) scored for Bochum.

For new coach Peter Zeidler, however, it was not enough for the first competitive match win under his direction. Both teams are still stuck at the bottom of the Bundesliga table.

They had shown from the beginning that they wanted to – and had to. Both teams had started the new Bundesliga season with three defeats, and Bochum had also messed up in the first round of the DFB Cup under their new coach Zeidler. The 26,000 spectators in the sold-out Ruhrstadion were treated to an entertaining match from the start, as both teams made an offensive start.

Bochum in particular pressed the opponent high and early – but this did not pay off at first. The offside trap of the high back four did not snap when Pichler was sent down the right wing. The attacker rounded Bochum goalkeeper Patrick Drewes and shocked the home crowd with the opening goal. But that really woke VfL up.

Just one minute after the goal, Zeidler reacted and brought on midfielder Anthony Losilla for the less than pleased defender Erhan Masovic. Shortly afterwards, the strong Myron Boadu served Bero in the penalty area, who equalized from a tight angle. A good ten minutes later, Philipp Hofmann cleverly passed the ball to Daschner with his back to the goal, who shot into the far corner to make it 2-1.

VfL coach Zeidler said before the match that they didn’t want to pay too much attention to their opponents, but rather play their own game. This worked better and better after the early substitution. But Kiel also wanted to equalize after the break. Armin Gigovic missed one of the best chances (61′) when he shot the ball over the goal from a free position at the penalty spot.

The guests pushed, but the decisive moves lacked quality and consistency. Until shortly before the end. Substitute Steven Skrzybski passed the ball flat into the middle to substitute Machino, who scored the flattering equaliser. All the more bitter for Bochum: a few seconds before the final whistle, the hosts hit the inside post and missed a great chance to win.
