California restricts smartphone use in schools

The US state of California is severely restricting the use of mobile phones in schools. California Governor Gavin Newsom justified the decision by saying that excessive smartphone use is closely linked to an increase in anxiety disorders and depression.

The new law is intended to help students focus on learning goals, their social development and the world in front of them rather than on screens, Newsom said. Schoolchildren will be allowed to use their phones in emergencies or with the permission of teachers or custodians. The law, which was introduced on a bipartisan basis, is expected to take effect in mid-2026.

With a population of around 39 million, California is the most populous US state.
