After a strong start from the starters, the Cavs succumbed to the Chicago Bulls, 116-112. Cleveland outscored the Bulls by 13 points in the first half before a 34-18 wallop in the third quarter brought Chicago back into the fight.

Amidst offseason chatter of an improved game, power forward Evan Mobley unveiled his flashes of brilliance, finishing with 19 points in 19 minutes while adding six rebounds and one assist.

Point guard Darius Garland tallied 13 points and five assists while guard Donovan Mitchell added 12 points, four assists, two rebounds and two steals.

Four of five starters played 19 minutes.

Cleveland revealed a faster pace in the loss, something they had been hinting during camp. The Cavs dashed a 117 in pace, marking the fastest of the opening preseason games.

The Cavs will likely be without Max Strus, who suffered a right hip contusion during the preseason opener. Isaac Okoro and Dean Wade will likely get some run, giving Cavs first-year head coach Kenny Atkinson some experimental opportunity in the exhibition.

While speed is new to the Cavs, the Pacers (0-1) are the marquee attractions of thrilling, up-and-down basketball from last season. They owned the second-highest pace in the league. Indiana will welcome a track meet. It’s up to the Cavs to keep up.

As evident of its run-and-gun style, Indiana lost their preseason opener against the Atlanta Hawks, 131-130.

The Pacers were poised for the win until the Hawks recovered an offensive rebound off a missed free throw, allowing Seth Lundy to hit the game-winning 3-pointer with 0.3 seconds left.

Pascal Siakam led the way for Indiana with 15 points, four assists and three rebounds. Andrew Nembhard added 10 points, three rebounds and three assists.

Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle played all five of his starters for 16 minutes before turning the game over to the reserves.

Similar to Cleveland, Indiana kept their core intact over the summer, signing Siakam to a new contract while sealing extensions with Nembhard and Obi Toppin. Indiana also added rookie Johnny Furphy from the 2024 NBA Draft.
