After overnight rain on the Brocken, emergency services are to go into the area in the morning to get an overview of the forest fire situation. It rained steadily for several hours, said the head of the crisis team, Immo Kramer, to the German Press Agency. There is good hope that the situation has eased further as a result. Now reconnaissance trips are to be carried out: “We are going in with staff to see what effect the rain had.”

The fire broke out on Friday on the Königsberg, a side peak of the Brocken, and spread over a length of around 1,000 meters. The fire was fought from the air and on the ground over the entire weekend. On Saturday evening, the emergency services finally managed to prevent the fire from spreading further. The area is currently closed to tourists.

According to district fire chief Kai-Uwe Lohse, further firefighting operations from the air are unlikely. The plan is mainly to carry out remaining firefighting work in the area and search for embers. Lohse expects around 50 emergency personnel to be deployed.
