CLEVELAND, Ohio – A Cuyahoga County grand jury indicted a Cleveland man Thursday in the hit-skip death of a 7-year-old boy.

Donald Mynatt, 32, is accused of running over Amir Prewitt on Aug. 16 as the boy rode his skateboard in a parking lot on Lakeshore Boulevard. The grand jury charged Mynatt with negligent homicide, two counts of failure to stop after an accident and tampering with evidence, according to prosecutors.

Police said Mynatt struck Amir with a Mercedez Benz SUV and dragged him under the vehicle. He then fled, authorities said.

“Amir Prewitt’s death is a terrible tragedy, and my thoughts and prayers remain with his family,” said the county’s prosecutor, Michael O’Malley. “Donald Mynatt selfishly thought he could evade justice, and thanks to the diligent work by the U.S. marshals and the Cleveland Division of Police that is not the case.”

Amir was transported in a private vehicle to Euclid Hospital, where he later died.

Police located the SUV Mynatt used in the incident the following day in Cleveland.

Last week, marshals found Mynatt in an abandoned office space located above storage units in Lake County.

Authorities said Mynatt had been wanted by law enforcement on a domestic violence charge, court records show.

He is to be make his first appearance in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court on Tuesday.
