Community gathers to raise awareness during Domestic Violence Awareness Month

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW)—The community gathered at Wichita State University on Saturday to raise awareness of domestic violence.

People came together for the 9th annual Purple Mile to walk a mile carrying the names of those lost to domestic violence.

“October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and this is something that, year-round, we’re really wanting to make sure the community recognizes is around us every day and how serious it is in our community,” said Keri McGregor, the program director at Catholic Charities Harbor House. “The community partners that are working diligently every day to try and make sure offenders are held accountable and that victims have access to resources is very, very important. This is just one of those events that allows the opportunity to do that.”

Veronica Johnson, a friend of a victim, says she doesn’t want people’s stories to be forgotten.

“Her name was Zaylah Quayunna Bronson. She was 19 when she died last year. Keeping her memory alive is something I’ve been a big advocate for. I’ve gotten tattoos for her, I’ve got two tattoos for her. I talk about her all the time, constantly posting, and I still text her now and then,” said Johnson.

The event was hosted by the Midwest Criminal Justice Institute, WSU HOPE Services, Wichita Family Crisis Center, and Harbor House.
