Cork woman faces two burglary charges

A woman woke in her bedroom in Cork in the early hours of the morning to find a woman she had never seen before standing in the doorway with a bag over her shoulder.

That was the scene described by Sergeant Gearóid Davis at Cork District Court as he outlined the allegations against Kya Staunton, of no fixed address, who faces two burglary charges.

Sergeant Gearóid Davis said it was alleged that on February 26 this year a woman woke in her home at Hibernian Buildings, Albert Road, Cork, to the sound of a woman standing in her doorway.

The stranger was carrying a bag on her shoulder and wearing a grey coat. She shouted at the intruder who ran from the scene. The owner followed her out of the property but not out of the building. Nothing was taken.

In another earlier incident, it was alleged that in an apartment at The Elysian, when the owner was on holidays between September 6 and 27, 2023, clothing worth €400 and food worth €150 were stolen. There was also €150 damage to a fridge.

Sgt Davis said the DPP had decided that the cases could be dealt with at district court level. After hearing an outline of the allegations in the case, Judge Philip O’Leary agreed with this decision that the case could be heard summarily.

Frank Buttimer solicitor asked for a précis of the evidence on the two burglary charges. Judge O’Leary adjourned the case until October 9 for that to happen. Kya Staunton was remanded in custody until then.
