Court charges 16 young people with public order offences in centre of Cork City

The investigation of a series of serious public order incidents in Cork city centre on a Sunday evening in August saw 16 young people appear at Cork District Court on Tuesday on various public order charges.

Sergeant John Kelleher said as each of the 16 cases was called that directions were awaited from the Director of Public Prosecutions and that a lengthy adjournment was required to get those directions.

Judge Treasa Kelly agreed to adjourn the cases until January 21, 2025, for DPP directions. All 16 accused people who appeared in court on charges were remanded on bail until that date.

It was reported at the time that on August 25 gardaí on beat patrol on Oliver Plunkett Street were attending to an injured man lying on the ground outside a premises and that a large group of people gathered on the street and became aggressive towards the gardaí as they tended to the man, and that many of them refused to disperse from the area when directed.

A total of 16 people who were charged in connection with these alleged incidents in Cork city centre that evening appeared on Tuesday at Cork District Court.

Charges

20-year-old Maureen Aigbera of Hazelwood Gardens, Riverstown, Glanmire, County Cork, is charged with having cannabis in her possession, obstructing Garda Paraic O’Connor at St. Patrick’s Street, Cork, failing to leave the scene of a disturbance when directed and engaging in threatening behaviour.

23-year-old Busola Akintope of Elm Vale Avenue, Wilton, Cork, is charged that she assaulted Garda Thomas McKenna at Princes Street as well as engaging in obstruction and threatening behaviour.

25-year-old Emmanuel Anaba is charged with being threatening, obstructing and refusing to leave the scene of a disturbance at Grand Parade, Cork, and being in possession of cannabis for his own use.

22-year-old Chukwuebka Ian Akabogu of Inish Fall, Bandon, County Cork, is charged with obstruction, threatening behaviour and refusing to leave when directed at Oliver Plunkett Street.

23-year-old Matthew Ekhosuehi of Willow Gardens, Brooklodge, Glanmire, is accused of obstruction, refusing to leave and engaging in threatening behaviour at Cornmarket Street.

22-year-old Martin Ekhosuehi of Willow Gardens, Brooklodge, Glanmire, is charged with obstruction, threatening behaviour and refusing to leave Grand Parade during a disturbance.

20-year-old Marvin Ekhosuehi of Willow Gardens, Brooklodge, Glanmire, is charged with obstruction and threatening behaviour at Oliver Plunkett Street, Cork.

21-year-old Kamji Gofwen of Brickfield Lane, Dublin, is charged with obstruction, threatening behaviour and refusing to leave Prince Street when directed.

22-year-old Emmanuella Itsede of Lios Rua, Cahermoneen, Tralee, County Kerry is charged with obstruction, threatening behaviour and refusing to leave the scene of a disturbance at Princes Street.

22-year-old Godson Ikebudu of Bruach Na Sionna, Castleconnell, Limerick, is charged with assaulting Garda David Driscoll at Oliver Plunkett Street as well as obstruction and threatening behaviour.

23-year-old Farid Murphy Lahadjo of Oakfield View, Glanmire, is charged with obstruction, refusing to leave and being threatening at Oliver Plunkett Street.

21-year-old Djomiou Lahadjo of Oakfield View, Glanmire, is accused of obstruction, threatening behaviour and refusing to leave Grand Parade when directed.

27-year-old Dylan Mdangoh Nchankea of Larchfield, Bridgemount, Carrigaline, is accused of obstruction, threatening behaviour and being drunk and a source of danger to himself or others at Oliver Plunkett Street, Cork.

23-year-old Chimdi Oji of Grangewood Court, Grange, Douglas, is charged with obstruction, threatening behaviour and refusing to leave the scene of a disturbance at Daunt Square.

20-year-old Melanie Oshe of Brooklodge, Glanmire, is accused of obstruction and threatening behaviour at Oliver Plunkett Street.

22-year-old Malcolm Oshe of Brooklodge, Glanmire, is charged with obstruction, threatening behaviour and refusing to leave the scene of a disturbance at Daunt Square.

Many of the defendants were represented by solicitor Frank Buttimer. Some were represented by solicitors Eddie Burke and Pat Horan.
