CLEVELAND, Ohio – The number of new COVID-19 cases in Ohio practically stayed steady this week, moving from 10,295 last week to 10,315 this week, the state reported Thursday.

This marks the second straight week in which the number of new cases has essentially been unchanged, after increasing sharply since early June. They peaked at 10,418 cases the last week of August.

In late August, the number of new cases broke the 10,000-mark for the first time since January.

At this same time last year, the state reported just over 9,600 cases.

An estimated 11.8% of Ohioans by late August received the version of the COVID-19 vaccine introduced last year. But the state did not provide an update the last two weeks. Instead the state has paused updating the number because a newer version recently became available and is now being recommended.

The COVID-19 vaccine dashboard is being updated “to reflect the number of Ohioans who have reported to have received the 2024-25 vaccine,” Ohio health officials said.

The total COVID-19 case count since early 2020 in Ohio has reached 3,828,102.

There were 281 Ohioans newly hospitalized patients with COVID-19 in the last week, raising the total since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020 to 153,821. A total of 10 people were admitted into the ICU, raising the total since 2020 to 15,888.

The state health department reported an additional 26 deaths from COVID-19, raising the total to 44,185. Death reporting sometimes lags by weeks.
