Decorate the desk with wooden notepads

Photo by Knife141, Matt Weber and Bear Woods

Writing down information when answering the phone requires paper to always be available nearby when working.

This is to simplify the steps to create a temporary list before listing it to a book or special software.

Therefore, to ensure that the desk is always available with temporary notes, this project will take you through the steps of making a wooden note pad that also serves to decorate the desk.

Some items are needed

• 3/8 inch boards
• 3/8 inch dowel
• Brass pins
• Screws
• Wooden knobs
• Drilling machine
• Jig or bandsaw machine
• Hacksaw blade
• Sandpaper
• Blowtorch
• Wood glue
• Wood clamps

SKETCH NEEDED

Start the manufacturing step by sketching the required shape inspired by tape dispenser.

The design will be divided into four parts where the main board at the bottom measures 7 inches long with a thickness of approximately ¼ inch (picture 1).

While the ramp section (number 2) has a length of 4½ inches.

While the part that has a round shape will have a length of approximately 6 inches that will be adjusted to the position of the ramp. (picture 2)

After sketching the required shape, cut the paper to be used as a template to facilitate the step of cutting the board.

Cut wood using a machine jig, scrollsaw or bandsaw. The cut part with a round shape in the middle needs to be punched with a hole of the right size dowels to place the paper later which is ¾ inch.

In addition to the ramp part, one of the ends will be planed to get a leaning shape. (picture 3)

Once all the parts are in place, join them together using wood glue.

Apply wood glue to the surface of the joint, then hold the joint in position with a wood clamp until the wood glue dries. (picture 4)

While waiting for the glue to dry, use the spare time to prepare the paper roll holder from dowels ¾ inch. Measure the distance between the two sides of the round wood and the depth of the wooden knob hole.

After that add to the size of about 1 centimeter before cutting dowels wood available. (picture 5)

While on the wooden knob, make sure the inside diameter matches the size dowels used.

If the obtained knob is too small, file or rub using sandpaper to get the required size.

To speed up the process, use a special engraving machine such as a Dremel. (picture 6)
In order to give a more attractive final result, the designed surface will be burned using blowtorch.

Use the fire slowly and avoid focusing on one surface for too long as this will cause the wood to burn into holes. Always move the burning step from one area to another until the desired wood color is achieved.

After that, rub the surface of the wood using 400 grit sandpaper to remove some of the surface of the wood. (picture 7)

Another way to get the preferred wood surface color is to use wood stain.

Various colors can be selected in this way from light to dark.
Two layers wood finish required by allowing time for the first coat to dry before applying the second coat. (picture 8)

While waiting wood stain to absorb and dry, free time will be used to make paper cutters and their alignment.

For the alignment tool, a brass pin with a diameter of 2 millimeters will be cut and bent at both ends at a 90 degree position.

While the paper cutter will be made from a hacksaw blade that is cut and punched with holes on both ends. (picture 9)

The lower part of the design, to ensure that the table surface is not damaged due to friction when moving the note pad later, will be paired with rubber feet.

Use screws of appropriate length when retaining them to prevent them from penetrating the top surface. (picture 10)

The final step is to position the alignment tool and paper cutter on the designed notepad.

As the most important part, the paper cutter can also be colored with bright paint to make the design more interesting.

With the creation of this design, now writing any information that you need to record immediately is easier and always available. (picture 11)

Design tip

• Use iron-specific paint when coloring the paper cutting surface.

• In addition to using wood glue, designs can also be joined using screws or small nails.
