DFB applies for Women’s European Championship 2029

The German Football Association would like to host the Women’s European Championship in 2029 for the third time after 1989 and 2001. This was decided by the DFB Executive Committee at its meeting in Frankfurt am Main. The declaration of interest for the application is to be submitted to the European Football Union (UEFA) by next Tuesday.

“The sustainable development of the topics of women in football and women’s football and thus also the implementation of the FF 27 strategy is a top priority within the DFB. The application to host the Women’s EURO 2029 is a flagship project for us and will give an additional boost to these areas,” said DFB boss Bernd Neuendorf.

Award shortly before Christmas 2025

The association’s bid for the 2027 World Cup was recently defeated by Brazil. Denmark and Sweden, as well as Portugal, also want to be involved in the race for the European Championship in five years with a joint bid. The UEFA Executive Committee is expected to award the European Championship in December next year.

UEFA requirements call for at least one stadium with a gross capacity of 50,000 seats, at least three stadiums with a gross capacity of 30,000 seats each and at least four stadiums with a gross capacity of 20,000 seats each. The tournament is to be played with 16 teams.

“We are looking forward to the application process with confidence,” said DFB General Secretary Heike Ullrich. This year’s men’s European Championship showed “that we are a good and reliable host for this type of major sporting event.”
