A double strike from Junior Adamu within three minutes has further increased Bochum’s worries in the Bundesliga. In his SC Freiburg’s 2:1 (0:1) win, the striker scored in the 58th and 61st minutes and was instrumental in the hosts’ second win of the season. Myron Boadu (45th) scored the rather undeserved half-time lead for the generally harmless Bochum team in front of 34,100 spectators.
There was good news for the South Baden team even before the game: regular goalkeeper Noah Atubolu was between the posts for the first time this season after recovering from an appendix operation, and coach Julian Schuster did not make any further substitutions compared to the 0:2 defeat at FC Bayern two weeks ago. Bundesliga debutant Koji Miyoshi and Boadu started for VfL instead of Anthony Losilla and Philipp Hofmann.
Tough first half
The first half was mostly tough. Freiburg dominated, but found little way into the goal-scoring zone. VfL initially relied on the virtues of a classic away team, standing deep and compact, but forgot about their attacking department for long stretches.
It took 45 minutes for Bochum to have their first chance to score, and it was a success. Dani de Wit passed the ball sharply from the left side, where Boadu reacted quickest and scored the first goal of the season for the visitors.
Miyoshi’s curious attempt
It was a flattering lead, which Miyoshi almost extended shortly afterwards. His curious shot attempt from just behind the halfway line almost landed in the Freiburg goal because Atubolu was standing far in front of it. The SC goalkeeper, who seemed a little confused, just managed to nudge the flat ball out of the goal.
On the other hand, VfL goalkeeper Patrick Drewes had a little more to do. Drewes thwarted a double chance from Ritsu Doan, as well as Merlin Röhl’s attempt. Freiburg’s 22-year-old playmaker had to leave the field in the 39th minute with a slight injury, and Eren Dinkci replaced him.
Fresh momentum after the break
Schuster brought in fresh players in the form of 2014 World Champion Matthias Ginter and Nicolas Höfler for the second half. Freiburg’s luck was once again hampered by Drewes, who made a brilliant save against Adamu following Grifo’s free kick cross.
The Freiburg striker stayed busy and scored twice after just under an hour. After being played through nicely by Grifo, he appeared alone in front of Drewes and scored to make it 1-1. The 2-1 came out of the melee a little less beautifully. The hosts didn’t care, and Grifo, completely unmarked, could have even made it 3-1 from ten meters. And Adamu missed another chance to score a hat trick in the closing stages.
Sixth SC victory in a row against Bochum
In the end, it was still enough for Freiburg to secure their sixth consecutive victory over an offensively harmless VfL Bochum, not least because substitute Hofmann (77th) and Felix Passlack (90th) narrowly missed.
