Drunk man creates his own field sobriety test; Subway worker steals cash, food: Berea police blotter

BEREA, Ohio –

Operating a vehicle under the influence: West Bagley Road

An Olmsted Township man, 20, was arrested at about 3 a.m. Sept. 29 for driving drunk on West Bagley.

Police saw the man’s Kia Sorento run a red light on Front Street at West Bagley. The man turned illegally onto West Bagley westbound and accelerated. He was driving at least 48 mph in a 35-mph zone.

Police stopped the Kia on West Bagley just east of Baker Street. As the man pulled over, his car hopped over the curb, then bounced back onto the street. Four passengers were in the car.

The man’s speech was slurred. The Kia smelled like alcohol. The man admitted drinking one beer about one hour earlier.

As part of the field sobriety tests, police asked the man to recite the alphabet, starting with the letter G and ending in the letter R. He went past R to V.

Also, the man raised his left leg slightly when reciting the alphabet, even though police didn’t ask him to do so.

Theft: North Rocky River Drive

The manager of Subway, 821 North Rocky River, told police Sept. 26 that a Subway employee stole $357 in cash and $75 in food from the restaurant between 3:15-3:45 p.m. that day.

The manager said the theft was captured on security video. The employee, a 46-year-old Berea resident, took the cash from the register, then locked the restaurant before leaving.

The manager said he wanted to file charges against the employee.

Criminal damaging: Riveredge Parkway

Someone broke a toilet bowl inside the women’s restroom at Dora Lee Payne Park, 205 Riveredge.

A city worker found the damage Oct. 1 and believes it occurred Sept. 25 or Sept. 26. A lock on the women’s restroom had been cut off and the door bolt bracket was damaged.

Also, a storage door lock was cut off but there was no damage to the storage area. The deadbolt on the men’s room door was damaged but no entry was made into the men’s room.

Theft: East Fifth Avenue

A maroon Schwinn mountain bike with 29-inch wheels was stolen between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Sept. 6 from a front yard on East Fifth.

The victim had left the bike unlocked.
