JAKARTA, OCT 21 – A 5.8-magnitude earthquake hit the eastern waters of Indonesia’s North Maluku region on Monday, according to the country’s meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency, Xinhua reported.

Initially, the agency reported the earthquake as a magnitude of 5.6 but later updated it to 5.8.

The earthquake occurred at 10:24 am Jakarta time with the epicenter located seven kilometers north of South Halmahera at a depth of 11 km below the seabed.

Tremors were felt at intensity levels III to IV on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale in Labuha town and Obi Island. No tsunami warning was issued because the quake was not strong enough to produce large waves.

Fehby Alting, head of the provincial disaster management agency, told Xinhua that the tremor caused no damage or casualties.
