A daycare centre in east Edmonton has been ordered to cease all operations due to ongoing safety and health concerns of children.

Waverley Day Care, located at 6825 89 Ave NW, was ordered to close Thursday with parents affected by the closure being notified via email or in person the same day. The closure will affect 54 children and 56 child-care spaces.

The daycare centre was initially placed on a probationary licence set to expire on Oct. 31. Since that licence was issued, Child Care Licensing (CCL) has worked with the program to return them to compliance. However, due to ongoing concerns surrounding the imminent danger to the health, safety, and well-being of children, the probationary licence was cancelled early.

A number of continued non-compliances

According to a report summary, on Oct. 3 and Oct. 9, CCL staff visited the daycare to complete followup inspections and identified a number of non-compliances that posed a risk to the well-being and development of children.

“Although extensions to the timelines have been provided, the Action Plan remains incomplete. The program continues to be in non-compliance with the approved Program Plan. The program has been unable to maintain compliance, in order to ensure the safety and well-being of the children is maintained,” the report said.

Some of the observations included seeing a staff member repeatedly pulling an infant up a step by their hand, toys and equipment that were either “incomplete” or broken, serving a glass of milk to a child who had a restriction to dairy products, and emergency medication not being secure and being accessible to children.

The report said that child attendance records were neither maintained nor up to date.

“In addition, the Notice of Cancellation, which describes the reason for a licence cancellation, was posted on the door of the facility,” said a Friday news release from the province.

In a letter sent to parents, the province said it has asked the daycare to consider reimbursing parent fees for the remainder of the month, but said for those who have additional questions to contact the licence holder directly. In addition, the letter included an alternate list of licensed child-care programs and family day home agencies.

Willlowbrae Academy West Point Centre shut down

On Wednesday, the province shut down Willowbrae Academy West Point Centre in northwest Edmonton after the Alberta government said children were left unsupervised numerous times.

The daycare was operating on a probationary licence, but after the problems weren’t addressed, the licence was revoked after expiring Wednesday.

Just under 190 children will be affected by the closure and the province said it will be working with affected families to find new child-care options.
