WASHINGTON (AP) – Billionaire Elon Musk has given $70 million to help Donald Trump and other Republicans win the November election, making him one of the biggest donors to the Republican Party according to campaign finance disclosures released this week.
Musk made donations over the summer to political action super committees or America PAC which he launched in May to help Trump in his bid to return to the White House..
“America PAC is just targeting common sense, and centrist values,” the Space X and Tesla founder said Tuesday on the X platform, shortly after the amount of money he contributed was made public.
Committees like America PAC can raise and spend unlimited amounts of money but are generally prohibited from coordinating their efforts with candidates they support.
The Federal Election Commission, which regulates federal political campaigns has allowed these candidates and committees to work together to encourage people to vote.
While candidates and political parties have traditionally organized and paid for such efforts, Trump’s campaign has struggled to raise money this year and has turned to groups like Musk’s America PAC.
So far, America PAC has spent more than $38 million on voter outreach efforts, according to campaign finance disclosures.
While Musk is America PAC’s top donor, he isn’t the only one as the committee also raised about $8.75 million from a handful of wealthy donors, including the Winklevoss twins, Tyler and Cameron, who are said to be the creators of facebook. – AP
