HELSINKI, 14 OCT – Lee Carsley admitted England deserved a ‘world-class coach’ after their 3-1 win over Finland yesterday
Days after England’s shock 2-1 defeat against Greece at Wembley, Carsley is refusing to concede another Nations League defeat to Helsinki with his future as England manager still up in the air.
Carsley was heavily criticized for fielding five attacking midfielders with no real striker against Greece and this time he opted for a more conventional line-up.
England are still far from consistent performances for long periods, but they mustered enough quality to claim their third win in four games since Carsley replaced Gareth Southgate.
Jack Grealish opened the scoring in the first half and Trent Alexander-Arnold’s free-kick doubled the lead after the break before Declan Rice completed the scoring.
Carsley is also aware of reports yesterday that former Bayern Munich and Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is being considered for the position.
The former Everton midfielder, who served as England Under-21 coach before being promoted, appeared to distance himself from the role during the interview.
“I was assigned for six games and I’m happy with that. This is a special offer,” said Carsley.
“This (England coach) job deserves a world-class coach who has won trophies and I’m still on track for that. What I’m trying to say is that it’s one of the greatest jobs in the world,” he explained. – AFP
