BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, 17 OCT – In an ongoing effort to increase awareness of electrical safety at work, the Electrical Safety Committee (ESCOM) organized an awareness event to promote best practices in electrical safety, particularly in the construction sector, which took place at the Theater Hall, Prime Minister’s Department, today this.

The event, which is a continuation of the award held last May, was attended by the Deputy Permanent Secretary (Energy) in the Prime Minister’s Department, Pengiran Haji Jamra Weira bin Pengiran Haji Petra.

Also attending the event included core and support members of ESCOM, senior management and staff of the National Safety, Health and Environment Authority (SHENA), management and staff of the Department of Electricity Services (DES), Brunei Darussalam Electricity Authority (AENBD) and Berakas Power Company Sdn Bhd.

Also present were management and students from educational institutions such as IBTE and Brunei Polytechnic as well as registered electrical contractors and consulting companies under DES.

In recent years, there have been several incidents involving electrical accidents that require deeper awareness and stricter safety measures. Among them are a lightning explosion incident during maintenance work at a substation causing a worker to suffer severe burns in June 2023 and the death of a worker after falling from a height after being electrocuted in December 2022.

Accordingly, the event was held with the aim of presenting the newly published Electrical Safety Best Practice documents to raise awareness and provide guidance on safe electrical installation in the construction industry.

In his closing speech, Acting Director of the Compliance and International Division as Chairman of the Electrical Safety Committee (ESCOM), Haji Noryasmin bin Haji Mohd Noor stated that the documents in question are proof of an unwavering commitment to building a safer environment at construction sites in throughout Brunei.
