Etihad Rail goes green with massive solar project

Etihad Rail is setting a new standard for eco-friendly transportation with its latest agreement.

The UAE’s national railway network has partnered with Emerge, a joint venture between Masdar and EDF Group, to install a large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) system and battery energy storage system (BESS) at its Ghuweifat freight terminal.

The project involves a 600-kilowatt peak (kWp) solar photovoltaic (PV) system, paired with a powerful 2.56 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS).

Under the agreement, Etihad Rail will leverage Emerge’s technology to generate solar power to supplement its Ghuweifat freight terminal with renewable energy during daylight hours, thus, offsetting night-time energy consumption as well as reducing emissions by more than 8,500 tonnes over the duration of the contract.

This powerhouse will generate a whopping 85 per cent of the terminal’s electricity needs, making it practically self-sufficient.

Shadi Malak, CEO of Etihad Rail said: “By collaborating with Emerge and initiating the transition to solar power, we are not only reducing our environmental impact but also building greener and more resilient supply chains, thus, supporting our nation’s goals and ambitions for a more sustainable future.”
