Euclid breaks ground on long-awaited rec center

EUCLID, Ohio — Construction on Euclid’s $10 million recreation and wellness center is slated to begin in the coming weeks.

Mayor Kirsten Holzheimer Gail, Recreation Director Mac Stephens, State Sen. Ken Smith and other city officials held a ground-breaking ceremony Friday.

The city awarded the construction contract to Infinity Construction, which is expected to begin work on the site in early October.

The city expects construction to last about 320 days.

The plans approved by City Council call for the 38,000-square-feet facility to be built in the parking lot of the ice-skating rink at Memorial Park, which also houses baseball and soccer fields, the city’s pool and tennis courts.

The center will have three multipurpose courts that can be used for basketball, volleyball, pickleball and indoor soccer. A walking track will circle the courts. There will also be a fitness area with exercise equipment and weights and three multipurpose rooms that can be used for things like yoga or Zumba classes, or meeting spaces for community groups or after-school programs.

It will also house the offices for the city’s recreation department staff.

The city will use $10 million from the $26 million it received from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 to pay for the new center.
