BELAIT, SEPT 9 – Fairulman bin Haji Bidin emerged as the champion of the 2024 Open Checkers Competition after beating some of the best players in the three-day competition held at the Town Hall, Kuala Belait, yesterday.
Present as the guest of honor and present the prize to the winner is the Member of the National Assembly (MMN), Yang Berhormat Haji Mohd Salleh bin Haji Othman, as Penghulu Mukim Bukit Sawat.
Also present at the event were MMN members and Bukit Sawat Village Head, Yang Berhormat Awang Mohammad bin Abdullah @ Lim Swee Ann as well as village heads and members of the Village Consultation Council (MPK) involved.
The competition, which took place from September 6 to 8, was attended by more than 30 participants from all over the country. They competed in the league format to grab a place in the top 16 who qualified for the knockout stage, before continuing the competition to the final stage yesterday.
Fairulman, who played brilliantly in a fierce final against Aziz bin Jali, managed to get ahead of his opponent to win the competition.
Meanwhile, Haji Amir bin Haji Salim took the third position who recorded victory in the deciding match defeating Haji Ali bin Mat.
The chairman of the Kampung Pandan A competition, Awang Abdul Aziz bin Haji Seri, when met by the media, said that the competition was the first organized by MPK Kampung Pandan A, in conjunction with the Birthday Celebration of His Majesty the Sultan and His Majesty the King. Brunei Darussalam’s 78th birthday.
“In addition to presenting prizes to the three best winners in the competition, a special award was also given to the youngest player, Noor Shafie bin Noor Arrashid who was 10 years old,” he said.
He also hoped that the competition would provide an opportunity for checkers players to show and hone their talents with other players from all over the country.
