FC Barcelona: Flick’s self-criticism over López’s absence: I feel guilty

FC Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has been self-critical about the renewed injury of his midfielder Fermín López. “I feel a little guilty about it,” said the former national coach at a press conference before Barça’s Champions League opening match this Thursday (9 p.m.) against AS Monaco. He “didn’t speak to the U21 national coach,” explained Flick: “Normally you would have had to say: ‘Leave him here.'” He was new in Spain, “even if that shouldn’t be an excuse.”

The 21-year-old López will be out for the next three weeks due to a muscle injury, although he was close to making a comeback in the meantime. This was announced by the leader of the Spanish Primera División. The Spaniard took part in the European Championships in Germany in the summer and then in the Olympic football tournament in Paris. In September he injured his thigh for the first time and has now suffered another setback. He was recently nominated for the U21 team, but did not play there.

“When I saw him yesterday when he was at the doctor, it wasn’t nice,” Flick said on Wednesday: “He is a player we could use in this situation. He can score goals and is also very professional.”
