Field Middle School student accused of making threats during practice, police say

CLEVELAND, Ohio – A Field Middle School student was arrested Wednesday and accused of making threats that involved “shooting up the middle school,” police say.

Several classmates told the school resource officer at 8 a.m. that the student had made the threats during an athletic practice on Tuesday, according to Brimfield Township police in Portage County.

The student was charged with making terroristic threats. He is in custody at the Portage Juvenile Detention Center. The age of the student was not released.

The Field Local School District has also disciplined the student, police said.

Authorities said no weapons were brought to school.

In recent weeks, many school districts have canceled classes after students have made threats. The messages are typically posted over social media accounts.

Police departments and school districts have encouraged parents to talk with their children about the messages.

A similar incident happened last week when an 11-year-old in student from Stanton Middle School in Kent was arrested and charged with making terrorist threats after he sent a threatening text message to another student. On the same day, three other students across Northeast Ohio were disciplined for threats.

Also last month, a student was removed from Roosevelt High School in Kent after he posted a photo on social media with a gun on his waistband.
