Fire crews race to put out structure fires in Oaklawn

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Multiple fire units responded to a fire in Oaklawn Monday evening.

The call came in at 9:25 of a fire at a home in the 4500 block of S. Juniper Avenue, in a neighborhood just west of Spirit AeroSystems and McConnell Air Force Base.

When KSN’s photojournalist arrived, most of the fire appeared to be out. A transformer behind the house was still burning but was quickly extinguished.

Sedgwick County Fire Department Division Chief Jeremy J. Whitney said crews found multiple small structures, such as sheds and vehicles, on fire.

“Three structures are completely destroyed. We were able to save one, and like I said, we were able to save the residences as well,” Whitney said.

Fire crews will remain on the scene until they are sure there is no longer a risk, especially because of the increased fire risk from the wind and dry conditions.

“We were challenged with the high winds, the extremely dry conditions, and we also had power poles involved,” Whitney added. “So we had to navigate that situation. Westar got here quick enough and got the power shut off for us, so we could keep the fire from spreading.”

Fire investigators will begin looking for the cause of the fire.
