Pankow has implemented its announcement and on Thursday agreed on a termination agreement with the school caterer “40 Seconds” on September 20th. The school authority announced this to the Tagesspiegel. This means that a new lunch supplier must be found for six schools in the district from the week after next. These are three elementary schools and three comprehensive high schools – in Berlin every schoolchild up to the sixth grade is entitled to a free lunch.

District councillor Jörn Pasternack (CDU) has campaigned for the schools to continue to provide for themselves in the coming week, “as this was the majority’s wish,” it continued. “The schools will continue to send their invoices to 40 Seconds.” From Monday, September 23, the plan is to commission “caterers on an interim basis over a medium-term period.”

“Legal questions regarding the exact modalities of interim contracts and regular procurement procedures, such as the need for a new Europe-wide tender, are currently being examined,” the school authority said. As reported, other districts also terminated – in the first weeks of the new school year, thousands of Berlin schoolchildren were left hungry at lunchtime because of mistakes made during “40 Seconds”.

After a large-scale delivery failure on Tuesday, the school administration had ordered that for the rest of the week “in alternative” other caterers are to be found for the 103 schoolsfor which “40 Seconds” is actually responsible – at the company’s expense.

As the “Berlin Morning Post” reported on Thursday, one of the replacement caterers has already withdrawn from several schools in Neukölln and Treptow-Köpenick. The school kitchens are said to have been lacking cleaning supplies, dishwashing liquid and other equipment, In addition, there were no trash cans and moldy food remains were foundUnder these circumstances, the caterer did not want to take responsibility for providing food for school children.
