Football Austria: Fan riots at Vienna city derby

After the football derby between Rapid and Austria Vienna, there were riots. Following Rapid’s 2:1 victory, fans from both sides stormed the pitch and fights broke out. Before that, Austria supporters are said to have thrown firecrackers in the direction of the neighboring Rapid East Stand. Projectiles are also said to have been fired from the ranks of Rapid fans.

According to media reports, the police intervened late and at least one person is said to have been injured.

Rapid coach Robert Klauß condemned the events. “These are images that we don’t want to see, they damage our external perception,” said the 39-year-old German. Since Rapid is “on probation” after the incidents at the derby last February, there is a risk of points being deducted, said the former coach of 1. FC Nuremberg. At the time, some Rapid professionals had joined the fans in homophobic chants.

For Austria coach Stephan Helm, it is “shocking that such riots are taking place in a country like Austria. Not only can you not come to such an event with your family, you actually have to be afraid.”
