The former CDU General Secretary Ruprecht Polenz has spoken out firmly against a possible coalition between the CDU and the Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) alliance – even if the AfD would govern in Thuringia as a consequence: “Personally, I am of the opinion that the people of Thuringia have elected this parliament in which the AfD and BSW have the majority. And if there is no other solution, they have to governPolenz told the “taz”.

He supports the initiative, to prohibit a coalition between the CDU and the BSW by means of an incompatibility resolution“The BSW actually stands against everything that can be described as the CDU’s DNA,” explained Polenz. The foreign policy issues are so fundamental, “we cannot ignore them at the state level.”

So far, an incompatibility resolution by the CDU only prohibits cooperation with the AfD and the Left Party, but not with the BSW, which split off from the Left Party. However, the election result of the state election in Thuringia has produced a politically tricky outcome: a majority without the AfD is only possible in combination with the BSW.

The Thuringian CDU has announced that it will hold initial talks with the BSW about a possible collaboration. (dpa)
