Frankfurt bans access to dikes

To protect the dykes from the Oder floods, the city of Frankfurt has banned people from entering the facilities. In recent days, hundreds of onlookers have come to the banks of the Oder to watch the slowly rising water level, the city administration explained. The authority had previously appealed to people to refrain from flood tourism.

Since the water level is expected to reach the level of alarm level 3 – the second highest warning level – during the course of Tuesday, Frankfurt’s mayor René Wilke (independent) has issued a general decree. According to this, from Tuesday onwards, dykes may only be entered or driven on by emergency services in the course of flood control.

Police officers and employees of the public order office will monitor the facilities, it was announced. Anyone who violates the ban can expect a fine of at least 50 euros, according to a city spokesperson.
