The handball players of the Füchse Berlin suffered a home defeat in their comeback in the Champions League after an eleven-year absence. The Berlin team lost an unfortunate 31:32 (16:16) to the top Hungarian team Veszprém HC in front of 7,019 spectators in the Max-Schmeling-Halle. The Füchse’s best scorers were Mathias Gidsel with ten goals and Lasse Andersson with six goals.

Coach Jaron Siewert had the entire squad at his disposal for the first time this season. However, the hosts had some problems in the first few minutes getting used to Veszprém’s strong physicality. The Füchse had a hard time finding gaps, especially in attack. The Hungarians were able to score goals more easily, but were unable to pull ahead.

In the middle of the first half, the Füchse found their way into the game better. When the score was 14:9, they missed several clear chances on counterattacks. Instead of being seven or eight goals ahead, Veszprém came back and equalized two seconds before the break.

After the break, the Berliners had a harder time again and were quickly behind 18:22. The experienced star ensemble of the guests repeatedly found gaps in the Berlin defense. But the Füchse fought and came within one goal again with 28 seconds to go (31:32), but Andersson missed the last shot to potentially equalize two seconds before the end.
