Greece is on alert with an outbreak of sheep pox

ATHENS, OCT 23 – Greece will implement a series of measures to control the spread of the ‘sheep and goat pox’ outbreak after the disease spread in several areas of the country, according to an announcement made by the Greek Ministry of Agriculture and Food Development yesterday.

A total of 17,500 animals were euthanized after the confirmation of cases in 104 farms across the country, reported Xinhua citing a media release by the ministry.

As a precautionary measure, the ban on moving goats and sheep is enforced for 10 days while experts try to trace the cause of the infectious disease, according to the ministry.

Slaughterhouses will be closed for 10 days, and experts will conduct tests in monitoring zones around identified farms.

The ministry is also supporting the affected animal breeders by providing financial assistance ranging from 150 to 500 euros (about US$162.5 to US$540.16) for each animal eaten. – Named
