Greek national player found dead in swimming pool

ATHENS, OCT 10 – Panathinaikos and Greek national team player George Baldock was found dead in his swimming pool yesterday, Greek newspapers reported.

The 31-year-old England-born senior defender died at his home in the southern Athens suburb of Glyfada, according to the news agency, Ana.

The Greek Super League and several clubs expressed their condolences.

National television ERT said the player was ‘at the bottom of the pool’ and a bottle of alcohol was found at the scene.

According to AnaBaldock’s wife, who was abroad, alerted the owner of the residence after failing to reach the player by phone.

Police cars and ambulances were outside the building and the coroner was called to examine the body, it said ERT.

Baldock joined Panathinaikos last May after seven years with Sheffield United, who were relegated from the Premier League to the Championship last season.

Originally from Greece through his father, he was called to join the Greek national squad in 2022.

He has made 12 appearances, but has not been called up for the Nations League match against England at Wembley early tomorrow morning due to injury, ERT said. – AFP
