WASHINGTON, OCT 8 – Vice President Kamala Harris yesterday called Donald Trump ‘grossly irresponsible’ for spreading falsehoods and harsh words about the federal response to the devastation of Hurricane Helene.
“There was a lot of misinformation and false information put out by the former president about what was there, especially to the survivors of Helene,” Harris told reporters before boarding Air Force Two to fly to New York. “It is incredibly irresponsible. This is about him. This is not about you.”
Hurricane Helene has killed more than 220 people in six states, and category 5 Hurricane Milton is on track toward Florida’s Gulf Coast.
Trump has made a series of unsubstantiated claims in the wake of Hurricane Helene, including saying the federal government deliberately withheld aid to Republican disaster victims. He also claimed that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has run out of money because all of it has been channeled into programs for illegal immigration in the country.
Harris said “the reality is that FEMA has so many resources available to those who need it most right now and resources that can help people get back on their feet to rebuild and have a place to go.”
“People deserve these resources and it is very important for people to apply for the help that is available to support,” added the vice president. “All those resources were created just for moments of emergency like this and people deserve the help they need.”
Trump also said during a visit to Valdosta, Georgia, last week that President Joe Biden was ‘sleeping’ and could not answer a call from Georgia Governor Brian Kemp. Biden, in fact, spoke to Kemp and said of Trump, “He lied, and the governor told him he lied, too.” – AP
