Hertha BSC narrowly won a spectacular second division duel between traditional clubs at 1. FC Kaiserslautern. The Berliners won 4:3 (1:2) on the fourth matchday and, after their second win of the season, have now collected seven points like the Palatinate team. Philipp Klement (32nd minute), Aaron Opoku (45th) and Boris Tomiak (68th) scored for FCK, while Jan-Luca Schuler (28th/64th), Derry Scherhant (51st) and Michael Cuisance, who scored the winning goal in the 79th minute, scored twice for Berlin.

In front of 48,608 spectators in the Fritz-Walter Stadium, Kaiserslautern had the majority of scoring opportunities throughout the first half, but the guests took the lead. Schuler headed in a pass from Jonjoe Kenny. But Kaiserslautern hit back just four minutes later and made it 1-1. Klement curled the ball into the far corner, leaving Hertha keeper Tjark Ernst no chance. In the 45th minute, Berlin defender Linus Gechter made a serious mistake, which Opoku exploited to make it 2-1 at halftime.

Six minutes after the restart, Lautern’s defense was too inconsistent and Scherhant took advantage of this to equalize at 2:2. FCK was then forced onto the defensive and conceded the 2:3 after 64 minutes. Schuler was again the scorer for Berlin. Just four minutes later, the game was level again when Tomiak scored to make it 3:3. But the visitors had the better end of the match when Cuisance scored with a deflected shot. The hosts then missed the chance to equalize again.
