KUCHING, 24 OCT – The British Royal Navy’s offshore patrol vessel, HMS Spey made its first visit to Sarawak for four days starting last Monday to improve bilateral relations, after stops in Penang, Port Klang and Kuantan.

The British High Commission in Malaysia in a statement today informed that the visit reflects the commitment of the United Kingdom (UK) to strengthen relations with Sarawak.

“We realize the great potential in cooperation between the UK and Sarawak, and this visit is a testament to that effort,” said Acting Deputy British High Commissioner to Malaysia, Tom Shepherd in the same statement.

During the visit, Shepherd and HMS Spey’s Executive Officer, Lieutenant Commander Kris White jointly organized a dinner on board for Sarawak’s senior political officials and stakeholders in the state.

There was also a learning session with SMD Semiconductor Sarawak and a guided tour to the ship for students from the Sarawak Foundation International School.

The ship’s crew also had the opportunity to witness Sarawak’s culture and nature before the ship sailed home.

The UK has a strong defense cooperation relationship with Malaysia including involvement in bilateral exercises such as Ex TIGER GOLD and maritime exercises (PASSEX) with the Royal Malaysian Navy.

“The defense cooperation includes membership in the Five-Nation Defense Agreement (FPDA) consisting of the UK, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand,” according to the statement.

Through the FPDA, member nations participate in Ex BERSAMA LIMA and Ex BERSAMA SHIELD exercises, which focus on joint operations in a multi-threat environment with exercises designed to enhance cooperation capabilities and strengthen military ties.

The UK is also working closely with partners in Southeast Asia to ensure a safe, prosperous and sustainable maritime region in line with the Rules-Based International System. – Named
