Huge queues as people wait patiently to get one more meal at the famous Jackie Lennox’s chip shop

Hundreds of people have been joining long queues outside the Cork institution Jackie Lennox’s takeaway this evening to get their final meal there before it closes for good on Sunday.

The legendary Cork chipper announced its closure on Monday, after over 70 years of business.

Videos circulating on social media show queues stretching from the door, around the street, and beyond Noonan’s Rd, with people willing to endure a long wait.

It is understood cars have been abandoned and traffic has been at a standstill in the area over the past couple of hours, as many join the ever-growing queue.

Thursday marks the first day the chipper has opened its doors since sharing the news, as it does not operate on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday.

The shop, which opened at 12pm on Thursday, has seen a steady influx of people throughout the day, all eager to have a taste of the famous food before it shuts.

“From a business perspective, we are at our busiest, the queues are unreal, but the stress of trying to run a business on our own, it’s difficult. And finding staff has been a huge issue too,” Brian Lennox told the Irish Examiner on Monday.

“Paperwork has become a burden. Every year, there seems to be more paperwork to fill in. The powers that be need to embrace small family businesses.

“It’s like a death in the family. It was just heartbreaking to make the decision and to have to tell staff on Monday night.

“We’ve been in it since we were kids. But it’s just become tough, very tough to run a small family business.”
