Hugo Viana to replace Txiki Begiristain as Man City football director

Manchester City on Saturday announced that long-serving Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain, will step down after the 2024/25 season.

This marks the close of a twelve-year tenure at the Etihad Stadium—the end of an era.

The male team confirmed this in a statement on the club website, noting, “Manchester City can confirm that Txiki Begiristain will step away from his full-time role as Director of Football at the end of the 2024/25 season.”

After 12 years at the Etihad Stadium, Begiristain will step down following the club’s participation in this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup.

His successor, Hugo Viana of Sporting CP, will assume the role in the summer of 2025, “but will collaborate with Txiki in the preceding months to ensure a smooth transition,” the club added.

Manchester City also expressed their intentions to “pay tribute to Txiki’s outstanding contribution” at the end of the season.

Begiristain, who has been pivotal to City’s success since joining in 2012 after a seven-year stint at Barcelona, will leave a significant void in the club’s leadership.

His departure has stirred speculation regarding Pep Guardiola’s future, as the duo have worked closely together, with Guardiola’s contract also nearing its end this season.
