As a world-famous film star, Kate Winselt is a popular subject for photographers – but she says she doesn’t have much fun in front of the camera. “I’ve never liked having my photo taken, but I’ve learned to do the job,” said the 48-year-old in an interview with the weekly newspaper “Die Zeit” (12 September). She doesn’t regret “a single photo” of herself, said the actress. “But I’d rather not be photographed than be photographed.”
In her new film “The Photographer,” Winslet plays the war correspondent Lee Miller (1907-1977), who was at the front for Vogue during the Second World War. Her photos became historical documents, including shots of the liberation of concentration camps. Winslet not only played the lead role, but also worked as a producer on the film.
In the interview, the British actress was critical of the film industry, saying that women are still at a disadvantage. “It’s still much harder for women to make films, direct, act, produce. Because we’re mothers, because we have to look after our families. We always have to juggle, we don’t have as much time as men,” said Winslet. The film industry may have changed, but “the shit is still the same,” said the 48-year-old. She herself has only now been able to start working as a producer because her youngest child is a little older.
