BROOKPARK, Ohio –An intoxicated Cleveland man, 38, was arrested at about 12:30 a.m. Oct. 2 after he refused to stop his sport-utility vehicle for police, then jumped out of the SUV and ran away.
Police saw the man driving southbound on Engle Road near Hummel Road. The SUV’s front end was badly damaged. One of the front tires was missing.
Police tried to pull over the SUV but the man didn’t stop. He turned east onto Hummel, running a stop sign in the process. Then he turned back onto Engle, heading southbound in the northbound lanes.
The man drove toward a police cruiser that was in pursuit. He tried to pass the cruiser but his SUV hit the cruiser’s front-end push bar.
Another cruiser blocked the SUV as it continued southbound, and the man stopped his vehicle. The man exited the SUV and ran eastbound into a parking lot on Engle. He tripped and fell to the ground.
The man tried to stand but police pushed him back to the ground. After wrestling with him, they placed him in handcuffs.
Police searched the man, who spewed profanities at them and tried to get away. Police eventually forced him into the backseat of a cruiser.
The man’s eyes were bloodshot and glassy. He smelled like alcohol and his speech was slurred. He admitted drinking alcohol.
