Is the “Padler” a “90,000 Euro crazy idea”?

The planned new city logo with an almost comic-like Potsdam coat of arms eagle has met with mixed reactions. Potsdam CDU co-faction leader Willo Göpel put it this way to this newspaper: “Distorting the Potsdam coat of arms eagle into a P shape is a 90,000 euro crazy idea that we should quickly put to rest.”

The logo was presented to the press on Wednesday and later to the main committee of the city council. There, the BfW faction leader Hans-Jürgen Scharfenberg admitted that he was still processing what he had seen: “It doesn’t inspire me.” The logo is reminiscent of a beer mug. CDU man Göpel criticized the fact that the red color that the SPD usually uses was used for the logo. Left Party representative Tobias Woelki, on the other hand, was bothered by the crown of the wall above the heraldic animal and the emphasized “P,” which could also stand for Prussia. He also criticized the fact that “the GDR’s agricultural achievements” could not be found at Schlaatz or anywhere else.

Praise, however, came from the SPD and the Greens. SPD parliamentary group leader Nico Marquardt, for example, was impressed by the process of derivation, i.e. the thoughts that played a role in finding the logo. It was about a design “that captures the soul of the city, with all its flaws,” explained Helmut Ness from the responsible agency Fuenfwerken Design. The logo was majestic, modern, democratic and unique, Ness said. Green parliamentary group leader Saskia Hüneke explained that the eagle was turning dynamically in one direction, and the large wing had a protective effect. She thought that was successful.

This year, the city councillors are to decide whether they really want the 90,000 Euro logo – or whether it will be previous Bockwurst signet remains. Mayor Mike Schubert (SPD) warned the committee that the parties should not start design courses themselves. However, at one point he joked that when he came up with the logo he had initially thought of a beer mug – or a word created from “P” and “eagle”: a “padler”.
