Policy: The order comes after a night of heavy bombing in Rafah where, according to Palestinian health authorities, at least 22 people were killed, including eight children, Al Jazeera reports.

Several residents of the area received alerts from the Israeli army on their phones in the morning and were asked to leave the area and seek refuge in a “humanitarian area” further west.

The Israeli army “encourages” Palestinian civilians staying in the eastern part of Rafah to gradually move “to specific areas”.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant hinted on Sunday that a planned military operation in Rafah would begin shortly.

At least 1.1 million internally displaced Palestinians have sought refuge in Rafah, which is located in the southernmost part of the Gaza Strip, on the border with Egypt.
